Instructions

This section is OUT OF DATE - I will update very soon for v2 of OWAtray

Settings

  • Server. The public URL of your Exchange server, without any slashes.
  • On Domain. Check this box if you are inside your corporate network and want to use your cached logon credentials to access Exchange. Note that checking this will disable the User, Password & Domain fields.
  • User. The domain user account you use to access your corporate network.
  • Password. Password for the above user account.
  • Domain. Internal name of the Windows domain. This is optional depending on your server security.
  • @. The software will combine your User & Server to guess at your email address, e.g. me@mycompany.com in the case of this example. This is not always correct. This field allows you to override either the Name or the entire email address. So entering bill would result in an email address of, bill@mycompany.com; entering bill@ourcompany.com would override the entire address.
  • Exchange URL. Normally this can't be modified as it is set by default within Exchange. If you have a customised Exchange installation and your sysadmin advises you of an alternative URL, then use the Advanced->Override Server URL option to make this field editable.
  • Update Interval. The frequency in seconds that OWAtray should poll Exchange for new mail. Can be any value between 1 to 3600 (1 hour). After changing this value, Stop then Start to activate the new setting.
  • Run at Startup. Ticking this box will enable OWAtray to start when Windows is logged in for this user only.

Main Controls

  • Start. Start polling the server.
  • Stop. Stop polling the server.
  • Save. Write the settings to file so they persist for future use.
  • Force. Cause an immediate poll (only really useful when the update frequency is set low).

Logging

Real-time log of activity. Events are either Information, Successful or Errors as denoted by the icons.

Menus

File

  • Exit. Stop all processing and shut OWAtray down.

Tools

  • .NET Versions. Open a window to display currently installed versions of .NET
  • MDAC Versions. Open a window to display currently installed versions of MDAC, the Microsoft Data abstraction layer.
  • System Information. Open a window to display basic Hardware & Software information,

Notifications

  • Balloon. Displays notifications using the standard Windows speech bubble effect.
  • Growl. Passes notifications to Growl for rendering. Growl must be installed.
  • Snarl. Passes notifications to Snarl for rendering. Snarl must be installed.
  • Play Sound. Plays an audible note.
Note that Notifications are cumulative and OWAtray will provide multiple notifications if desired.

Advanced

  • Override Certificate. Use this only if you don't have a signed certificate on your server and are willing to let the client connect without security.
  • Override Server URL. See above; use only if your EWS URL is non-standard.
  • Always open OWA in IE. Useful if you have Firefox or Chrome as your default browser but still want to use the advanced features of OWA that only function in Internet Explorer.
  • Disable Calendar. Select if you do NOT want notification of upcoming appointments.

Exchange Version

  • Exchange 2007/2010. Switch to the version which your server is running. Exchange 2007 SP1 is the minimum supported version. Exchange 2010 enables more advanced functionality.

Shell Integration

  • Make OWA Default. Register OWA as the Default Mail handler with Windows. This integrates OWA onto the Desktop, into Office & registers it to handle Mailto links. See below for important minimum requirements for this feature to work properly.
  • Switch Off. Switch the Default Mail handler back to the original settings.

Help

  • Change Log. Opens a window showing the history of releases.
  • Support. How to contact me.
  • About. Version information.

Tray Icon

OWAtray will dock itself in the Windows tray and can be used to interact with the mail system.
Initially the icon will display a message as follows.

Then, once connected to Exchange, it will show more detail.

Double-clicking the icon will bring up OWA in the browser. This will either be in the default browser or, if the override is switched on, Internet Explorer.
If OWA has been logged into already then OWA will go straight to the Inbox, otherwise the login screen will appear. Once logged in, as long as a browser window persists then the session will be maintained.

Right-Click Menu

  • Options. Re-opens the main OWAtray window.
  • Open OWA. Equivalent action to double-clicking the icon. Opens OWA in browser.
  • Open Outlook. If Outlook is installed, this will open it.
  • Recall Last Popup. Re-displays the last popup window.
  • Reset Tray Icon. Switches the icon from showing New Mail to the standard icon without affecting any unread mail. Useful as a Silence function.
  • Exit. Close OWAtray down.

Icons

  •  No unread mail or Reset Tray Icon has been selected.

  •  At least one unread email is in the inbox.

    Notifications

A typical notification popup will look as follows.

Clicking on the icon will start up a browser window with that email message or calendar appointment open.
(Note: this functionality is only supported when using Exchange 2010)

Growl & Snarl

For Growl & Snarl to operate then those programs must be installed & running on your PC. No configuration is needed.
Selecting an option without the program being installed will not cause any problems, OWAtray will simply ignore it.

Shell Integration

This is a highly experimental function and has only been tested with a narrow set of criteria. It would be useful to me if users could report back on alternative configurations which prove either successful or unsuccessful.

Requirements

  • Windows XP, Vista, Win7
  • Internet Explorer 8, 9
  • Exchange 2010 and 2010 SP1
  • The OWA S/MIME control must be installed!

Autologin

This is an experimental function and will only work if the OWA login screen is set to 'This is a private computer' and the system has been manually logged in at least once.  After checking this has been done, Autologin should work.
